"The opportunity to make another record working with the Verve vocal catalogue, which continually yields gems that inspire the artists and producers to create such special collaborations, combined with all the things we learned from working on the previous albums, allowed us to make a record we’re very proud of." “Verve Remixed 3 is a testament to the talents we worked with" says co-producer Todd Roberts. "They each transcended the idea of a remix by digging deep into the spirit of the original songs.”

Verve Remixed 3 follows in the hallowed footsteps of its groundbreaking predecessors Verve Remixed (2002) and Verve Remixed 2 (2003). Those acclaimed collections featured the likes of Thievery Corporation, Tricky, DJ Spinna, and Felix Da Housecat reinterpreting works from the legendary artists of jazz such as Astrud Gilberto, Billie Holiday, Betty Carter, and Nina Simone, respectively. Combined, the two previous Verve Remixed releases have sold over a half-million units.

ABOUT ABB:
Since its inception in 1997, ABB Records has established itself as an independent force to be reckoned with in the world of hip-hop. Major labels, in particular, have certainly taken the ABB quality standard seriously: several ABB artists have gone on to ink major record deals. ABB’s worldwide rep has been built on a solid foundation of consistency and musical excellence—not always a given when dealing with the music industry.

ABOUT MARK de CLIVE-LOWE:
Half Japanese half New Zealander musician/producer Mark de Clive-Lowe has been on the music journey since starting piano when he was only four. Classical piano lessons, jazz for playing pleasure and hip hop and soul on the stereo gave Mark the diverse foundation that his eclectic style has developed from. Over the past ten years, Mark's musical journeying has taken him to the US, UK, Europe, Asia, Australia, New Zealand and Cuba. Performing and recording in different settings collaborating with DJ/producers, turntablists, acoustic jazz artists, Japanese Kagura, and the world of Latin rhythms, Mark has become a major figure in the nu-jazz movement.

DEFARI AND DJ BABU TEAM UP AS THE LIKWIT JUNKIES
After a decade long camaraderie, Los Angeles based artists Defari of Likwit Crew notoriety (home to The Liks, King Tee, Xzibit) and DJ Babu of Dilated Peoples and Beat Junkies fame have teamed to release their self-titled debut, The LJs, on March 22nd 2005 via ABB Records. The Likwit Junkies are no strangers to hip-hop. The inevitable collaboration is a union long in the making…even if neither one of them was aware at first.

What finally brought these two together after a decade long friendship? “It was kind of an accident” jokes Babu. “We’d both focused on our own projects and t we never had the chance to work together.” After remixing “Behold My Life” for Defari’s sophomore release Odds and Evens, they soon realized their musical chemistry. Since then, they spent time in the studio recording the album around their crazed work schedules. The final result is this new hip-hop duo. It presents classic hip-hop with a contemporary edge combining the raw energy of Babu’s beats and Defari’s gritty and sober lyrics in what is sure to be a ground breaking album this year.

The 15-track CD is produced entirely by DJ Babu, executive produced by the Likwit Junkies (and ABB president Beni B), and features guest appearances by Rakaa Iriscience (“Dark Ends”) of Dilated Peoples, sultry L.A. vocalist Noelle (“L.J.s Anthem”), Planet Asia (“One Time”), plus a few more. The lead single “One Day Away” is already generating attention at radio, a video for the single is in the can, a national tour is in the works, and record release parties are being held in Los Angeles and San Francisco in late March.

ABOUT THE LIKWIT JUNKIES:
After nearly 10 years of creating good music independent of each other, Babu and Defari took to each other like the musical equivalent of peanut butter and jelly. Both have established themselves as hip-hop main stays; Babu being a world recognized turntablist and up-and–coming producer and Defari being a well respected L.A. artist and mentor. The result is a new LP resonating the complimentary nature of emcee and producer, while still showcasing each one’s own distinctive sound.

ZION I SET TO RELEASE THIRD ALBUM, TRUE & LIVIN’, IN APRIL 2005

Long heralded by critics as one of the finest home-grown products to emerge from the Bay Area’s burgeoning and legendary underground hip-hop world, Zion I is set to release their third and best LP to date, True & Livin.’

True & Livin’ --which features Talib Kweli, Gift of Gab, Del The Funky Homosapien, Aesop Rock and social activist Fred Hampton Jr.--will undoubtedly become one of the most important and talked about independent releases of the year. And for good reason: True & Livin’ is a musical amalgamation of rap, soul, jazz and blues, which runs the gamut from saxophone soaked reflections of life in ghetto America, to synthesized, upbeat, socially conscious anthems to acoustic guitar-driven southern blues ballads. And in a marked break from their previous two albums, True & Livin’ is full of serious subject matter, tackling issues like relationships, social injustice and perhaps, most striking, whether the love of hip-hop is really worth the struggle to make music and survive doing it.

“Since the album is coming out on our label,” explains MC Zion, “it is the exact record we wanted to make. We didn’t cater to a particular fan-base or any aspect of the industry.”

In another break, Zion I has opted for a combination of live instruments coupled with a stunning array of sample-driven, soul and funk heavy beats, as opposed to their trademark drum-and bass driven soundscapes.

“This is the type of production that I have always wanted to do,” explains Amp Live, Zion I’s producer. “For production on True & Livin’ I used gritty samples, live music and bangin’ ass drums, topped off with a little electro sauce. It really all came together perfectly on this record.”

The result is a beautiful, organic and at times downright moving sonic odyssey—enough to make even the shallowest listener contemplate, dance or get up off the proverbial couch and take to the streets.

Of course, making beautiful, provocative music is nothing new for the Oakland-based MC Zion and Amp Live, who exploded onto the national hip-hop scene in 2000 with their debut LP Mind Over Matter. The record melded hip-hop with drum & bass and jazz elements and is now viewed by many as an indie classic.

In 2003, the group dropped their much anticipated follow-up, Deep Water Slang, which garnered both Source and VIBE award nominations for ‘Best Independent Album of the Year,” and pushed the group on tours and live appearances with the likes of Kool Keith, Lyrics Born, Del The Funky Homosapien, De La Soul, Jurassic 5, Mos Def and The Roots (Zion I has also been a mainstay on the MTV 2/Mountain Dew Circuit Breakout tour the last two years.)

Sure enough, through True & Livin’, Zion I has proved defiantly, once and for all, that it’s impossible to underrate MC Zion’s sharp poetics and Amp Live’s varied and original production; that it’s impossible to dismiss the group as simply ‘underground hip-hop; that it’s impossible to ignore their musical call to arms…. That this is good, soul-healing music. Period.

In support of their new record Zion I has scheduled a worldwide tour which will include stops in Japan, US, Canada, Germany, France, Netherlands and the UK.

True & Livin’ drops April 19, 2005.
