The Other Side - Berlin - Ellen Allien

"This new CD/DVD series from Time Out (of magazine and guidebook fame) takes artists/musicians/creatives from metro areas around the globe and has them act as tour guides for the "other side" of their city - the cool/interesting/weird establishments they frequent in their actual lives." - Fader

"Pop this in your suitcase along with your translation book and currency converter and you'll be good to go." - Tokion

"These are insights so intimate that residents of the cities profiled might actually get defensive over the exposure of their hitherto secret spots." - Nylon

On April 28th, Time Out and Deaf Dumb and Blind Recordings release Ellen Allien - The Other Side Berlin. The fourth installment in the Other Side series features the critically acclaimed Ms. Allien's personal guide to Berlin's sights, sites and sounds. Her diverse audio tour includes tracks from the infamous Detroit techno innovators Carl Craig and Plastikman, Germany's funky minimal Bookashade, David Bowie's German rendition of Heroes (Helden) & Ellen's own track from her latest release Orchestra of Bubbles.

A hometown hero, Ellen Allien started the BPitch Control Party Series and founded the ubercool label BPitch Control Records. On her 2 hour-plus DVD, Ellen shows you her personal Other Side of the city she knows and loves.

With the Other Side, a new generation of immersive travel guide is upon us. Deaf Dumb & Blind Communications, a new progressive and multi-faceted entertainment company, teams up with internationally recognized travel guidebook and weekly magazine publisher Time Out to produce a series called The Other Side — an CD/DVD experience that submerses its listeners/viewers entirely below the city's surface.

Each volume of The Other Side boasts two key elements: a mixed CD compiled by a native audio pioneer and a DVD guide that acts as a visual handbook for both the seasoned traveler and armchair adventurer alike. While some travel guides aim to be comprehensive, The Other Side isn't concerned. It simply wants its user to enjoy and discover the very best and coolest in sight and sounds. It whispers in the user's ear advice on where to go and what to see — and it does it with unprecedented style and flair.

That's why Time Out is a perfect match for Deaf Dumb & Blind's concept. According to Peter Fiennes, Editorial/Managing Director of Time Out Guides, "We're extremely happy to be working with The Other Side and Deaf Dumb & Blind on this exciting new concept. We've always been keen to expand into music, CDs and travel on DVD, but The Other Side gives us the chance to do it all at the same time. The Other Side has lined up some great artists and we're convinced this will be a very successful and ground-breaking project."

The Other Side - Los Angeles - Madlib

This new CD/DVD series from Time Out (of magazine and guidebook fame) takes artists/musicians/creatives from metro areas around the globe and has them act as tour guides for the "other side" of their city - the cool/interesting/weird establishments they frequent in their actual lives." - Fader

On April 10th, Time Out and Deaf Dumb & Blind Recordings release Madlib - The Other Side Los Angeles. The fifth installment in the Other Side series features critically acclaimed rapper/producer Madlib's personal audio tour of the City of Angels. Highlights of this genre-bending mix include the eclectic/outrageous jazz consciousness originator - Sun Ra Arkestra, 60's psychedelic blues quintet Outlaw Blues Band, legendary reggae drummer (Burning Spear) Leroy "Horsemouth" Wallace, Jamaican record label head/DJ Producer Prince Jazzbo, and Madlib's own tunes- as Beat Konducta (solo) & with collaborator Jaydee (Jaylib).

On The Other Side Los Angeles DVD, Stone's Throw label supremo Peanut Butter Wolf is your personal guide to LA's sights, sites and sounds. The DVD also features an in-depth interview with Peanut Butter Wolf on 10 years of Stone's Throw as well as videos from several Stone's Throw artists.

From the unlikely beach town of Oxnard, 40 miles north of Los Angeles, the multi-dimensional Madlib quickly rose to prominence as one of the most interesting figures in late-'90s hip-hop. With his childhood buddies in the Lootpack, Madlib quickly made a name for himself as a rapper, producer, and DJ. In particular, his expansive style and deft touch for composition made him one of hip-hop's most sought-after producers. An enthusiastic crate digger, with a deep reverence for jazz and soul, Madlib branched out into a number of ambitious, engaging solo projects.

Scion Presents "Want2BSquare" Art Shows in LA and NYC

Scion Presents "Want2BSquare" Art Shows in Los Angeles and New York to Promote the All-New 2008 Scion xB
-Gallery Shows Feature Original Artwork from: Dalek, Matzu, Maya Hayuk, Sage Vaughn, Kelsey Brookes, UPSO, and Freddi C-

LOS ANGELES (March, 2007) – Scion has called upon seven dynamic contemporary and internationally-recognized artists to create original artwork inspired by and in celebration of the all-new 2008 xB urban utility vehicle. The artwork will be displayed at "Want2BSquare" art shows in New York and Los Angeles, and carry the theme of squares, boxes and cubes to follow the xB's boxy style.

"The 'Want2BSquare' show is a great opportunity to blend the creative art world with the launch of the second generation xB," said Jeri Yoshizu, Scion sales promotions manager. "Scion will continue to promote artistic creativity in special gallery executions like this."

Each artist was asked to paint on canvases of two square sizes, 48" x 48" and 24" x 24", which were then assembled into cubes that will be suspended from the ceiling at various heights throughout the gallery. Smaller cubes will display the artwork on the outside, while the larger cubes will show artwork on the inside enabling the viewer to gaze up into the artwork from directly beneath the box.

Artists involved in the show include:
• Dalek, creator of the famed Space Monkeys (
www.dalekart.com);
• Matzu, a Japanese artist (
www.matzu.net);
• Maya Hayuk, a classic-rock-punk-folk-rainbow-peace-freak-out artist (
www.mayahayuk.com);
• Sage Vaughn, a Los Angeles based artist (
www.sagevaughn.com);
• Kelsey Brookes, scientist-turned-illustrator (
www.kelseybrookes.com);
• UPSO, publisher of the Art Annual "Faesthetic" (
www.upso.org); and
• Freddi C, founder of the Streetwise art series, (
www.freddic.com).

Guests will be able to meet the artists at both shows and have the opportunity to purchase the original art work. All proceeds from the sales will go directly to the artists.

The Want2BSquare art shows will take place in New York on April 6th at Skylight Studios (275 Hudson Street) and in Los Angeles on April 21st at the Scion Installation L.A. gallery (3521 Helms Avenue, at National). Each event will also feature live DJ entertainment. Cosmo Baker and DJ Ayers from The Rub DJs will perform at the New York events, while the Los Angeles show will host DJ Ramses and DJ Denimslinger.

The art shows are part of an xB pre-launch strategy anchored by the recently launched Want2BSquare.com site. The site was developed by Scion's creative agency, ATTIK. The "square" universe is represented inside an engaging, entertaining, multidimensional web experience where visitors are encouraged to explore an expansive world, play games against other visitors, view a wealth of video content celebrating the xB's boxy shape, and discover other quirky experiences.

CrystalTop Music Presents...

Street Date ::: 4/17/07

Brooklyn-based CrystalTop Music reached out to its extended network and brought together eleven beautiful gems from eleven different artists for CrystalTop Music Presents. But drawing a line through the sounds collected under the banner of CrystalTop Music is an exercise that’s more likely to result in beautiful scribbles and loops than in a legible graph. “Diverse” barely begins to sketch the range. In fact, the common element shared by these artists may be the absence of a stylistic bag that can comfortably hold them; all the songs seem to reach for some sound that doesn't fit into easy black and white categories.

This is partly an act of curation, so that Pyeng Threadgill’s soul-jazz take on Bill Withers and The Dang-it Bobbys' country-rock joint, “Say Goodbye” talk to each other in ways they might not if you encountered them separately. But mostly it’s something that happens within the songs themselves. The heart of “Say Goodbye” is a soaring southern rock chorus worthy of The Allman Brothers, yet restless enough to wander off into Stevie Wonder-ish chord changes that speak of doo-wop. “Foreign Country” is the lyrical conceit of Christina Courtin’s sharp but melancholy love song — but also a subliminal self-description of grass a slightly different shade of blue, a moody ballad that finds its down-home abroad. Even the afrobeat of Martín Perna’s Ocote Soul Sounds has a Deep Purple heaviness, and elsewhere on this collection the spirits of Norah Jones, Pink Floyd, Carlos Santana and Radiohead are all channeled in unexpected ways.

Some of this is the natural eclecticism of well-crafted music, the ease with which serious players have always traded licks in spite of genre boundaries. But if phrases and ideas seem to jump more freely, over greater divides, on CTM Presents it’s because CrystalTop is not a studio-generated fiction but a clique of artists sharing six degrees of connection on stage and on record — in some cases the spokes on this wheel have known each other from school days, maybe even ran together as graffiti artists hitting up crystal-top buses. The music they make with each other reflects a generation who have come up with the self-segregated logic of rap and rock and ultimately rejected or outgrown it. It’s a new approach, but also a throwback in some ways to a certain moment of 70s utopianism, not because it’s self-consciously "retro," but because it’s the sound of a generation of 70s harmony babies and 80s zebraheads coming of age with a boom. The result is a brand new bag.
The label on the side reads: Can’t we all just get it on?

Geek Pop Star - Nymph (Made Records) 03/27/07
Have you ever met someone for the first time, yet you felt as if you've been close to them for years? Wait, scratch that. Let’s try again. Have you ever heard a record for the first time, yet felt like it was music you had been listening to your whole life? Ah, now we’re on to something. Say hello to NYMPH. With grating and thumping beats that taste crystallized, yet bittersweet soul melodies that bring a musical warmth, NYMPH has created an electronic palette of different genres ranging from jazz to jungle. The result is a rainbow of pop art that comprises their debut release “Geek Pop Star”. Led by the distinctive vocals of singer/songwriter Shari, “Geek Pop Star” pays tribute to the vivacious NYC electronic scene with a bark AND a bite that grips the listener upon pressing play. With obvious yet understated influences that include hiphop, rock, house and classical music, Shari exuberates herself as a soulful Bjork /Gwen Stefani with the pop sense of a Madonna. “Geek Pop Star” is a labyrinth of words, sounds and colors that gets into your soul and stays there. An additional bonus is the standout production skills of the very hot and talented Markus Moser who recently created the Billboard Club #1 worldwide smash “Is It Love” from iio, a record that not only has scorched clubland but is still a current Dance Radio hit and reached #1 sales status on the DJ driven portal beatport.com. Markus delivers the goods like only he can setting the tone for a record that is incomparable to anything on today’s predictable electronic/pop scene
