I remember hearing the phrase Urban-Alternative years ago by a good friend and mentor of mine, Boston Felder. He explaned to me that the hip-hop generation was becoming more and more intelectual by the minute. That the minds of our culture had expanded beyond what the "so-called" music industry labeled hip-hop, R&B, Soul, Jazz, or Rock. It would only be a matter of time before the urban culture splentered.

I am a part of that splinter. We can create new sounds and move in new directions using the inspiration of our forefathers to leave new musical legacies behind for our youth to learn our traditions in sound.

I see a movement of artists going in this direction. Some are genuine innovators and others smell a fresh fad. I hope people are ready for what will be the new sound. If not...better get ready to get RAN OVER...its time for change.

ps. stop stealing other peoples music...write some new sh*t...

This is an interesting debate. It is at that point where you can't group all urban artists into just a few categories. The sounds and styles are just too unique and broadly different. The urban categories at The Grammys, the better the chance for more urban artists to be recognized.

let me start off by saying u have 1 helluva memory! i don't think i saw u taking any notes!

alotta the stuff u wrote is dope--ekoes much of my thots w/re: 2 'good' (music) vs 'evil' (labels).

unless we're all 'plugged in' 2 a matrix 2 communicate w/ea other only via music & w/o actual lingos (does a cat speak french wen it's not meowing a musical mating call?), categories & such will b necessary in perpetuity 4 admin purposes--akin 2 sy's comment on $-making (soapbox: applicable only 2 a cash-filled society).

it's like borders in geografy r necessary 2 seek & 2 plan where u want 2 b @--previously explored or not. but the borders themselves don't necessarily define the people who live w/in them; they're still prone 2 evolving/redefining (soapbox: if they choose not 2 live in a cancerous society, as it were). (we had a similar convo about the genre of trip-hop & its stereotypical meaning/moods.) & neither does going 'there' define the traveler. maybe if i'd mentioned geografical territory like i just did, the panel MITE have @ least artificially brushed on the event's subtitle.

i suppose 4 an artist 2 transcend categories, they must b extremely 'well-traveled'. eg. wot kinda face would u put 2 an 'american'? a compilation of hedshots & fotoshop mite b required. & my nationality just mite b synonymous 2 the term 'urban alternative'. hip hip hooray! we've settled on an finitely infinite genre. & based on 'quality of the performance and song', wot type of 'sound' would u put 2 it? or on the term 'music' itself?! it all seems maleable, but that's just stating the obscured obvious--the Truth.

despite all this, i still maintain we're all just saying 'God God God God God' 2 ea other...or 'Love Love Love Love Love' or 'Peace Peace Peace....' ah crap, here we go agen.
