April 12th - Nextaid Benefit w/ Samantha James and Black Spade

Nu-Soul Magazine and NextAid are joining forces to bring you FUSION on Saturday April 12 at Skinny’s Lounge in North Hollywood.
This will be a landmark night of future soul and hip-hop featuring LIVE performances from acclaimed Om Records artists Samantha James & Black Spade. All proceeds will go to NextAid to support their mission in assisting children orphaned by AIDS in Africa!
Performances by Om Records newest stars:
SAMANTHA JAMES LIVE
Songwriter/performer Samantha James has spent the past three years honing her estimable skills as a modern-day singer/songwriter within the dance/electronic/soul genre. Her sultry style, vocal cadences, and international rhythms are largely influenced by such artists as Sade, Basia, Amel Larrieux, Bebel Gilberto and Morcheeba. On her debut album ’Rise’ for San Francisco based indie label Om Records, Samantha teamed up with producer and co-writer Sebastian Arocha Morton-AKA ROCAsound (Sting, Vikter Duplaix, Fischerspooner, Fila Brazilia and Rick James for the classic finale’ of the hit film Little Miss Sunshine.)

BLACK SPADE
Black Spade’s music is a melting pot of sounds hailing from St. Louis by way of New York, Detroit, LA, and everywhere that hip-hop has carved a distinctive and influential sound for itself. Writing and producing all his music along with MC’ng, Spade’s one man team approach is full of burbling synths, and off-kilter drums while his voice slides smoothly over choruses coated in multi-tracked vocals and skipping roughshod drums. Spade’s cadence flutters up and down like Pharoahe Monch, but stays introspective like Common. Before you know it, he’ll switch to singing and suddenly his songs become less like hip hop experimentation and more like fully fleshed sketches. At his core, Black Spade is a producer who makes music because he loves to. His sounds are grounded in the past while still sounding futuristic, and most importantly come from the heart.

Strictly Social Blends Music And Art For A Monthly Evening Of Eclectic Soul Fusion

Strictly Social Blends Music And Art For A Monthly Evening Of Eclectic Soul Fusion - Artist/Designer Ritzy Periwinkle is featured at the March 26th event

Strictly Social has emerged as one of the Los Angeles soul scene's most significant new monthly events thanks to a commitment to the concept of "Eclectic Soul Fusion." Held on the last Wednesday night of every month in the North Hollywood Arts District of Los Angeles, Strictly Social is fast becoming one of LA's most unique monthly events incorporating listening parties for major releases, guest DJs, visual artist exhibitions and intimate performances from rising stars in the soul community. A collaboration between Soul Union, Nu-Soul Magazine and Elemental Consulting, this night of "Eclectic Soul Fusion" takes place at the gorgeous Skinny's Lounge, a charming venue with a speakeasy vibe. Each month Strictly Social aims to provide a non-traditional perspective on soul by fusing genres and styles. Artists that have performed at Strictly Social include Gina Rene, Peter Hadar, Jimi James, Rozzi Daime, and Jamal. Photographers Kawai of Air Philosophy and Gregory Prescott have displayed their work at previous events.

On March 26th Strictly Social is proud to present the visual art of LA's Ritzy Periwinkle, aka Marisa Estrada - a Los Angeles artist and designer with deep roots in urban art and music culture. The name Ritzy Periwinkle, a pseudonym that started among her and her crew, stems from "Maritza" (the way her birth name was originally supposed to be spelled) and the Crayola color, "Periwinkle". The tight beats and poetic lyrics of Hip Hop fuel her artistic creativity. Graffiti is one art form of many which Ritzy proudly incorporates into her work. Graduating from California State University Long Beach with a fine art degree with an emphasis in graphic design, Ritzy has created designs and artwork for Dilated Peoples, Aterciopelados, Sonic Youth, Calle 13, "I Am Legend", Slick Rick and many more. With art exhibitions in art and music hubs such as Los Angeles, Detroit and New York, Ritzy communicates a beautiful energy and respect for her community of women and people of color. Working in photography, illustrations, graphics, collage and creating a flourishing boutique t-shirt line, Ritzy compliments her gritty stylistic tendencies with a positive vibe that is attributed to her eclectic influences and unique background. Ritzy Periwinkle happily mixes music and art to her own beat, bringing pure harmony to her creativity.

Musical performances on March 26th will be provided by Mike The Poet, Taniq, guest DJ Seven57 and there will be an album listening party for Lina's Morning Star.

Scion Presents: Nomadaz - A Mediterranean Art Connection

Scion Presents: Nomadaz
SCION PRESENTS: NOMADAZ - A MEDITERRANEAN ART CONNECTION
Curated by Pablo Aravena

Los Angeles - February 2008 - Scion, in conjunction with Pablo Aravena, proudly presents
Nomadaz - A Mediterranean Art Connection Exhibition at the Scion 4,500 square foot Los Angeles Installation Gallery. Aravena is the filmmaker behind "Next: A Primer in Urban Painting." Nomadaz brings together four Italian and four Spanish artists, to show off their Mediterranean flavor on U.S. shores. Featured artists from Spain are Sixe, Nuria, Nano 4814, Eltono, all of whom have their roots in graffiti and street art. Their style and work has evolved to encompass other styles and formats including sculpture, interior design, illustration, advertising, branding and institutional projects. The Italian artists include Microbo, Bo130, Dem and 108. The exhibition will comprise of new work as well as site specific installations.

"While I was filming NEXT, I had a chance to meet many great artists along the way," explained Aravena. "I first realized that there was a Mediterranean connection when I met Microbo along with Sixe, Nuria, Nano and Eltono in Madrid. There was a strong personal/artistic connection there. These guys are all very different but they all know each other, having painted with each other all over. I thought it would be great concept to match them up again and bring in some new people like Dem and 108. I wanted to see what they would come up with if they got to play with a big space together."

In terms of individual style, this is a varied group of artists; however, together they represent a significant, contemporary artistic practice of working in both the street and gallery settings in Italy and Spain. The exhibition title, Nomadaz, represents the way of life of the featured artists - always traveling and moving to paint, often along the Mediterranean. For this exhibition, these art nomads descend on Los Angeles for the first time. For more information on Aravena, visit: www.nextthemovie.com

The opening reception takes place March 8, 7:00 P.M. - 10:00 P.M. at the Scion Installation L.A. Gallery, 3521 Helms Ave. (at National), Culver City, Calif., 90232. The show will run until March 29th.
