Scion Presents: Nomadaz - A Mediterranean Art Connection

Scion Presents: Nomadaz
SCION PRESENTS: NOMADAZ - A MEDITERRANEAN ART CONNECTION
Curated by Pablo Aravena

Los Angeles - February 2008 - Scion, in conjunction with Pablo Aravena, proudly presents
Nomadaz - A Mediterranean Art Connection Exhibition at the Scion 4,500 square foot Los Angeles Installation Gallery. Aravena is the filmmaker behind "Next: A Primer in Urban Painting." Nomadaz brings together four Italian and four Spanish artists, to show off their Mediterranean flavor on U.S. shores. Featured artists from Spain are Sixe, Nuria, Nano 4814, Eltono, all of whom have their roots in graffiti and street art. Their style and work has evolved to encompass other styles and formats including sculpture, interior design, illustration, advertising, branding and institutional projects. The Italian artists include Microbo, Bo130, Dem and 108. The exhibition will comprise of new work as well as site specific installations.

"While I was filming NEXT, I had a chance to meet many great artists along the way," explained Aravena. "I first realized that there was a Mediterranean connection when I met Microbo along with Sixe, Nuria, Nano and Eltono in Madrid. There was a strong personal/artistic connection there. These guys are all very different but they all know each other, having painted with each other all over. I thought it would be great concept to match them up again and bring in some new people like Dem and 108. I wanted to see what they would come up with if they got to play with a big space together."

In terms of individual style, this is a varied group of artists; however, together they represent a significant, contemporary artistic practice of working in both the street and gallery settings in Italy and Spain. The exhibition title, Nomadaz, represents the way of life of the featured artists - always traveling and moving to paint, often along the Mediterranean. For this exhibition, these art nomads descend on Los Angeles for the first time. For more information on Aravena, visit: www.nextthemovie.com

The opening reception takes place March 8, 7:00 P.M. - 10:00 P.M. at the Scion Installation L.A. Gallery, 3521 Helms Ave. (at National), Culver City, Calif., 90232. The show will run until March 29th.

Dedicated to fostering independent artistic expression, the Scion Installation L.A. Gallery is a space that allows artists to explore their creative visions. The Scion Installation Gallery hosts art shows and art-related events for cutting-edge artists from across the globe. Due to success and growth, the Scion Installation L.A. Q&A With Apart's Adrian Palengat

Q&A With Adrian Palengat of APART, Regarding Scion Presents: Love Will Bring Us Apart Again

1) What is the theme or meaning of the show?
it's simply to show how pop art is constantly being re-interpreted and reworked by artists working in different media around the world

2) How did you select and find the artists involved?
theyve been scooped up by apart over the last 9 years and i picked the ones for this show who were most likely to get there work in a container on time !

3) How did Scion find you and approach you to do a show?
i hosted freddi c and the scrawl collective's big american grafitti show 'streetwiseone' in my london gallery in 2001

4) What's been the biggest challenge you faced in putting together this show?
it's still to come - hanging it on the 15th !

5) Is there anything in particular you would like people to take away from this show - what would you like to inspire in those that view the artwork?
the same response that we always seem to get which is: inspiration, joy, laughter and fascination at how these artists think of the things they do and....how, a bit like the harlem globetrotters, they put on such a great spectacle as a team

6) What do you have lined up for the future? What's next after this show?
im curating a 3 week group show at steve shaw's beautiful new abbott kinney gallery on the 16th march for 3 weeks, then back to london to curate an enormous notting hill apart retrospective for all our artists to say hello to their old clients, then back to las vegas where im putting on another big group show in mid may downtown, then to zurich for a pakpoom silaphan solo show... and the rest of the year i'll work out as i go !!

SCION PRESENTS: LOVE WILL BRING US APART AGAIN

Curated by Apart

Los Angeles – January 2008 – In association with Apart, Scion presents: Love Will Bring Us Apart Again, at its Installation L.A. Gallery. With its 27 pop artist shootout, this show is Apart's first stateside venture.

Curator and gallerist Adrian Palengat, will bring together over two dozen of Apart's artists, from 10 different countries, to show their very distinct flavor on U.S. shores.

"For our L.A. launch, I wanted to bring in a heavy payload of foreign artists to see how they'd tackle a U.S. audience, and as usual, they've come at the challenge from lots of different directions,” said Palengat. We've brought in painters, sculptors, photographers, illustrators and installation artists, given them no brief, other than 'we've got 4,500 square feet in L.A.' and let them get on with it."

"That's the joy of putting these sort of shows together for me - I put artists from literally all over the world in one room and watch them express themselves".

Participating in Love Will Bring Us Apart Again will be artists from Thailand, Spain, Argentina, Sweden, Japan, France, New Zealand, United States, England and Belgium, only a handful of whom have ever shown in the States before.

Amongst the eclectic lineup will be Sex Pistols photographer Peter Gravelle, Belgian caravan artist Mr Wim, Swedish latex scupltress Emelie Salford, Japanese designer and photographer Super Violence, French punk teddy bear creator Tony Pronier and English glitter king Robalot.

Other participating artists in Love Will Bring Us Apart Again include: Tim Blake (U.K.), Conrad Leach (U.K.), Luis Perez (Spain), Gustavo Gagliardo (Argentina), Sean Alexander (U.K.), Pakpoom Silaphan (Thailand), Craig Lynn (U.K.), James Holdsworth (U.K.), Cat James (U.K.), Ryan Hadley (U.K.), Nick McFarlane (New Zealand), Ben Allen (U.K.), Dominic Allan (U.K.), John Parkin (U.K.), Brian Jones (U.K.), Janna Stern (U.S.A.), David Hollier (U.K.), Sunil Pawar (U.K.), James Mathers (U.S.A.), John Counsell (U.K.), and Antoine Corbineau (France).

Apart was formed by Palengat in 1999 on London's bohemian Portobello Road, an area untouched by galleries. Acting on a tip from his artist girlfriend that the London art scene was boring, arrogant, conformist and in need of something different, Palengat opened his 2,500 sq. ft. space. Specializing in foreign artists working in different media, the showroom soon became a favorite of artists and collectors alike, for its simple and unpretentious approach. Collaborations with a wide range of corporations ensued ranging from LVMH, Commes des Garcons and Royal Elastics to KSwiss, Jones Soda, Duotone Snowboards and Vladivar Vodka.

In November 2006, the space on Portobello was sold and two mini Aparts were opened in Tokyo. In 2007, Adrian Palengat took the showroom on the road, curating shows in France, Tokyo, London and Milan. Shows in Tokyo, Zurich, Las Vegas, France and London are planned for 2008. For more information on Apart Productions, visit: www.ap-art.co.uk

The opening reception takes place February 16, 7:00 P.M. – 10:00 P.M. at the Scion
Installation L.A. Gallery, 3521 Helms Ave. (at National), Culver City, Calif., 90232. The show
will run until March 1.

This show, Scrawl's biggest to date, is dedicated to exploring the light and dark side of the famous "Special Relationship" that exists between the U.K. and the U.S.A. The Scrawl Collective exhibition will feature specially created installations and new work by artists. Featured Scrawl Collective artists will include Will Barras, Mr Jago, Steff Plaetz, PhlAsh, DistOne, David Walker, Nick Purser, RYCA, Hutch, Ian Stevenson, Will Ainley and Felix Kiessling.

Scrawl Collective is an art and design collective from the U.K. Growing from a small tight-knit group of young English artists who banded together with Scrawl founder Ric Blackshaw in 1999, Scrawl Collective is known for pioneering a doodley, scratchy style of urban art that today has many adherents and can be seen everywhere from street art to mainstream advertising. While remaining true to these roots, Scrawl has expanded over the years picking up new artists along the way and developing the breadth and scope of their work as they go. Scrawl Collective has built up a formidable global reputation for its live art and installation shows and a ready market for its paintings and prints. SCION PRESENTS: RUGS DURING WARTIME AND PEACETIME
Los Angeles - Oct. 2007 - Scion, in conjunction with Mark Mothersbaugh, one of the founding members of the band DEVO, presents RUGS DURING WARTIME AND PEACETIME at Scion's 4,500 square foot Installation L.A. Gallery. This show is an exploration of the imagery we choose to bring into our homes and how we interact with it for the purposes of comfort and peace-of-mind rather than an esoteric sense of art for art's sake.

Mothersbaugh's love of art started early in his childhood, just after it was discovered that he was extremely nearsighted and legally blind. After he received his first pair of correctional glasses Mothersbaugh had a new view of the world that inspired his obsession with imagery and illustrations. His first works, which he began creating in the late 60s and into the 70s, consisted of many different mediums, predominantly drawing and printmaking. He participated in local showings, and received recognition for his work in his home town of Akron, Ohio.

With DEVO, his most successful music project, Mothersbaugh was able to showcase his artistic abilities on a larger scale, and to millions of people. Through their films, videos, costumes, LP covers, stage shows, and printed materials, Mothersbaugh and DEVO forever altered commonly held preconceptions of how a rock band should function in popular culture.

During his downtime on early worldwide tours with DEVO, he began illustrating on postcards to send to his friends, which he still creates, and has been creating every day for over 30 years; a very obsessive habit which still yields anywhere from one to 25 new images per day. These cards were originally created as his personal diaries, and were never intended for public viewing. That all changed when Mothersbaugh decided to share his postcard works in his critically acclaimed solo shows during the 80s and 90s, and then with his gallery tour in 2003 titled HOMEFRONT INVASION! This marked the beginning of many solo shows to come. Mothersbaugh followed the 2003 tour with his BEAUTIFUL MUTANTS tour in 2004, which showcased his photographic symmetrical creations and 'corrected' imagery. The tour distributed many more of Mothersbaugh's works throughout the world, and attracted more first-time gallery visitors and art buyers to his shows.

Mothersbaugh's gallery tours since 2005 have featured new works from both his Postcard Diaries Prints and Beautiful Mutants photographs, giving each gallery a choice of either visual theme. His busy life includes spending time with his wife and children, scoring music for movie, TV, and computer games at Mutato Muzika Studios (www.mutato.com), performing with DEVO (www.clubdevo.com), and creating artwork for his Visual Art Gallery Tours (www.mutatovisual.com).

The opening reception takes place November 17, 7:00 P.M. - 10:00 P.M. at the Scion Installation LA Gallery, 3521 Helms Ave. (at National), Culver City, CA 90232.

Scion Presents: Rendition

Scion celebrates cutting edge art with the opening of a new show, Rendition, in its 4,500 square foot Installation L.A. Gallery. Curated by Eyeone, (Seeking Heaven Crew and Second to None), Rendition features artists Asylm, Cab, Jorger, Kozem, Klee, Luna, Mear, Panic, Passenger, Patrick Martinez, Skypager, Vyal, and Yem.

Eyeone began painting with aerosol during a boring summer break between grades 10 and 11 in high school. He forms part of the Seeking Heaven and Second to None street art crews. His work has been featured in diverse publications, notably the books “Graffiti World,” “Graffiti L.A.,” “Big Time Magazine,” and “Rime,” among others. He has exhibited extensively in the U.S. and is currently featured in an exhibition representing LosAngeles in France. Born in Mexico City, Eyeone was raised and is based in Los Angeles. He holds a MFA degree in Design Media Arts from the University of California, Los Angeles.

Involved in the street art movement since 1989, Asylm began his quest to develop a recognizable street art style on the walls of the Los Angeles River. Asylm actively transfers the value of art as a mentor in community organizations such as the Los Angeles Conservation Corps’ Clean & Green program and Artcorps L.A. Asylm works with students to create colorful murals that can be seen throughout 20 schools within the Los Angeles Unified School District.

Cab is regarded by many as one of L.A.’s most prolific street artists. Hailing from East Los Angeles, his work has traveled the states and the globe. He has been featured in countless publications, including “Lost,” “The History of Los Angeles Graffiti Art,” and “Graffiti L.A.”

Cache has turned the streets of his native Los Angeles into a vibrant outdoor gallery. His walls prominently featuring his trademark chicken characters can be seen throughout the city.

Seeing the graffiti in his East L.A. neighborhood inspired Jorger to pursue art from a very young age. This pursuit has led him to develop his visual style in diverse media, from skateboard graphics and apparel to painting and 3D modeling.

Klee's painting adventures began in 1992 in Guadalajara, Mexico and continue in L.A. to this day. Armed with spray paint, oil paint, acrylics, or sometimes a screen and a squeegee, he has worked on numerous surfaces including walls, trains, bridges, canvases, wood panels, metal plates, and other found objects. He considers his mission in life to speak and act against injustice through his art and to always find a way to exist despite all challenges. It’s in his blood.

Kozem is a highly active exponent of a new generation of urban artists. He lives in East Los Angeles.
Born in Mexico, Distrito Federal and raised in Los Angeles, Luna first became drawn to street art in junior high. "Something about it appealed to me, and I guess you can say I’ve been hooked ever since. In high school a friend of mine 'borrowed' Subway Art from the library for me and I loved it so much, it never went back. Since then I’ve experimented with spray-paint and other fun marking tools, but mostly I’ve spent my time documenting things – much of it graffiti – throughout L.A. (and wherever else I find myself) on good old-fashioned film. Every once in a while, I’ll pick up a can or two for mural projects and other such shenanigans. My eye is very drawn to walls, bridges, trains, buildings, and the paint found on these surfaces: hidden treasures in the midst of grotesquely large, obnoxious, and visually polluting advertisements plastered all over the city.”

Educated on the streets of Los Angeles, Mear is a self-taught painter, designer and sculptor with a professional art career that spans over fifteen years. The artist’s philosophy is clear in his name, which is an acronym meaning Manifest Energy And Radiate. His art is a passionate attempt to speak a higher form of language, encouraging people to raise their social and political consciousness and become involved in their own lives through creativity. Mear has achieved legendary status among the urban street art circle and has been recognized as an international art sensation. His raw, vibrant style catches the eye with its colorful intricacy and ensnares the mind with its deep, intriguing messages.

Panic is recognized by the Los Angeles street art community as a style innovator and influence on countless practitioners of the art. Most recently, he was a consultant on the monumental “Graffiti L.A.” book project. He is a member of the Seeking Heaven crew based in North East Los Angeles.

Since the vivid days of Patrick Martinez’s childhood he was drawing or scribbling on something. In his teenage years he was introduced to Hip Hop culture and exclusively to one of its elements, street art. Hip Hop has influenced his art ever since he understood what it was about. He uses subject matter such as everyday people that aren’t usually painted into the limelight and elements of the city that would be thought of as objects we take for granted. He keeps a steady career doing illustrations and design for clients such as ADIDAS, RIME, FRANK 151, NIKE, UPPER PLAYGROUND, SOUL ASSASINS, and STONES THROW. Patrick holds a degree in illustration from Art Center College of Design.

A native Angeleno, Passenger currently makes Long Beach his base of operations. He is a photographer and printmaker who documents everything from daily life to the underground punk scene.

Skypager’s work is a highly developed craft merging elements of typography, punk rock, skating, street art, and all the other syndromes of a city such as Los Angeles. His clients include NIKE, STUSSY, and X-LARGE. He is a member of seminal L.A. skate crew Shred Team and all-Cali graffiti crew Lords.

YEM is an acronym for Y x ENERGY = MOTION. Once known as Krenz, he is reminded of this equation every time he inks his name. With roots back to the L.A. Bomb Squad, K2S, and the mastermind of AMseven, he has nothing to prove. Transferring himself to France in the early 90s, he wrote his way around Europe. Stamping his mark one ink stain at a time, his name is synonymous with substance. His works strive for meaning and awareness; insight is etched into each piece. Now back in Los Angeles, he continues the development of this high-risk craft, working against the ink of night.

Vyal is currently living in Los Angeles. He is constantly booked for live street art and mural work. His technique and imaginative iconography grace the walls of many communities throughout the city. He will be speaking on street art at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) in L.A. this spring.

Sheak has been dj’ing in unique fashion throughout L.A., including stints at the Beauty Bar, Le Deux, Vermont, Barcade, and Monroe’s.

An Echo Park local, Dr. Jules is premiering his documentary on L.A. street art at the Battle of the Year Festival in Montpellier, France.

Rendition refers to an interpretation of culture in Los Angeles, translated by the artists and presented in a visual form. For some of the artists in this exhibition, rendition alludes to the fact that some of their creative work, as in the case of street art, is often rendered, made to disappear, its whereabouts unknown. For others, rendition is literal: the rendering of an image fed by the experience of living in this city.

The opening reception takes place June 9, 7:00 – 10:00 P.M. at the Scion Installation LA Gallery, 3521 Helms Ave. (at National), Culver City, CA 90232. The show will remain up through June 30.

The new Scion Installation Gallery hosts art shows and art-related events for cutting-edge urban artists from across the globe. Due to success and growth, the Scion Installation L.A. -Gallery Shows Feature Original Artwork from: Dalek, Matzu, Maya Hayuk, Sage Vaughn, Kelsey Brookes, UPSO, and Freddi C-

LOS ANGELES (March, 2007) – Scion has called upon seven dynamic contemporary and internationally-recognized artists to create original artwork inspired by and in celebration of the all-new 2008 xB urban utility vehicle. The artwork will be displayed at "Want2BSquare" art shows in New York and Los Angeles, and carry the theme of squares, boxes and cubes to follow the xB's boxy style.

"The 'Want2BSquare' show is a great opportunity to blend the creative art world with the launch of the second generation xB," said Jeri Yoshizu, Scion sales promotions manager. "Scion will continue to promote artistic creativity in special gallery executions like this."

Each artist was asked to paint on canvases of two square sizes, 48" x 48" and 24" x 24", which were then assembled into cubes that will be suspended from the ceiling at various heights throughout the gallery. Smaller cubes will display the artwork on the outside, while the larger cubes will show artwork on the inside enabling the viewer to gaze up into the artwork from directly beneath the box.

Artists involved in the show include:
• Dalek, creator of the famed Space Monkeys (
www.dalekart.com);
• Matzu, a Japanese artist (
www.matzu.net);
• Maya Hayuk, a classic-rock-punk-folk-rainbow-peace-freak-out artist (

The Want2BSquare art shows will take place in New York on April 6th at Skylight Studios (275 Hudson Street) and in Los Angeles on April 21st at the Scion Installation L.A. gallery (3521 Helms Avenue, at National). Each event will also feature live DJ entertainment. Cosmo Baker and DJ Ayers from The Rub DJs will perform at the New York events, while the Los Angeles show will host DJ Ramses and DJ Denimslinger.

The art shows are part of an xB pre-launch strategy anchored by the recently launched Want2BSquare.com site. The site was developed by Scion's creative agency, ATTIK. The "square" universe is represented inside an engaging, entertaining, multidimensional web experience where visitors are encouraged to explore an expansive world, play games against other visitors, view a wealth of video content celebrating the xB's boxy shape, and discover other quirky experiences.
