This album charts many of the collaborations thorugh The Angel’s career. From back in the day; the one-time Garth Trinidad (KCRW) favorite by Jaz Klash, “Thru The Haze (The Angel Remix),” where The Angel remixed her jazzy dnb collaboration with Bristol’s More Rockers, to new remixes courtesy of DJ Drez, who gives both versions of The Angel’s “Destiny Complete” feat Mystic, the Jahta treatment. Divine Styler appears on the album on both sides of the mixing board; remixing The Angel’s “Make It Betta” (feat Tre Hardson), originally a limited vinyl only release, while also guesting on vocals on both the “Act I” and “Act III” mixes of “Act As If.” The Dread Flimstone & Pale Face remix redub of 60 Channels’ “Ride With The Flow,” originally a limited vinyl only release, the O.G. version of which was featured in the TV shows “Six Feet Under” and “La Femme Nikita.” Headset’s (Plug Research) unreleased remix of “OK…Alright” by Mystic, recently unearthed, available here for the first time. Tre Hardson “10 Million Ways,” produced by The Angel is also previously unreleased.

Producer/composer The Angel is doing a 1 1/2 hour guest DJ spot on Kristi Lomax’s “Restless Soul” show on KPFK this Monday, March 23rd, at 10:30pm.
You can listen live at:
http://www.kpfk.org/listen-live.html

The Angel will be playing some of the new material from her next album release, “Supa Crucial Downtempo Remixes & Rarities” which includes DJ Drez’s new remixes of The Angel “Destiny Complete” featuring Mystic, Tre Hardson’s “10 Million Ways” produced by The Angel, Dread Flimstone remixes of 60 Channels “Ride With The Flow” and other unearthed gems.

More info on that album at a future date…
In the meantime you can download/post Covert Movements (Instrumental)

Following the grimey, dubby feel of 60 Channels “Counter Evolution (The Angel Remix)” are the two latest 60 Channels releases, “Scorched Earth (Earthstar Mix) and “Covert Movements (Instrumentals)” which are on the more evocative and mellow end of things. 60 Channels is The Angel’s alter ego. Angel describes the Covert Movements (Instrumentals) album as being a “look under the hood” for fans and producer enthusiasts as well as an inspirational backdrop.

About The Angel

The Angel is a record producer, film composer and recording artist. She hails from Brooklyn and is now based in LA via a nice long stint in London. Her sound encompasses flavors from the many places she has lived in. She’s taken an independent approach to recording her own albums after signing to Delicious Vinyl back in ‘93. She has been committed to building her own catalogue of recordings since then… and has worked with an eclectic group of vocalists and musicians often taking people out of their associated genres and giving them a platform to branch out into unknown territory. Many of these relationships started from her early days of remixing fellow artists like label mates, The Pharcyde and The Brand New Heavies as well as other acts like Spearhead, DJ Food, Frente, Monday Michiru and more…

Some of these early introductions led to her producing tracks for Tre Hardson, Mystic, Jacky Terrasson and Monday Michiru. Always a big advocate of the artist, she took Mystic under her wing and was instrumental in getting her signed to GoodVibe Recordings, who Angel felt would respect Mystic’s artistic integrity.

The Angel produces an undefinable mixture of downtempo atmospherics, with hints of hip hop, reggae, jazz, dub and soul all infused with her own vibe. Because she programs and engineers all of her recordings the ideas are coming out undiluted… though collaborating with other artists has always produced something unique as well as spiritually satisfying.

The cinematic quality of her work led her to film scoring. She’s one of a small handful of female composers… “Boiler Room” and “Gridlock’d” are among the films she has worked on and the UK feature, “Kidulthood.” This cutting edge and important British film gives us a gritty look at what life is really like for a group of 15 year olds in West London and the challenges they face growing into adulthood. “The Heart Of The Game” is an inspiring look at girls high school basketball, exploring the racism, sexism and competition that the Seattle Roughriders and their unorthodox coach have lived through over six seasons.

In 2006/07 Angel infiltrated primetime network TV, scoring the FOX drama, “Standoff” starring Ron Livingston and Rosemarie DeWitt. Always looking for a new challenge… and keeping the projects varied, she scored the inspirational Lifetime original movie, “Racing For Time”, for director/actor, Charles “Roc” Dutton as well as the UK’s cutting edge BBC3 / Kudos produced drama, “WEST 10 LDN” for director, Menhaj Huda.

the east bay express – “a strong contender for rap record of the year.”
jay scarlett - “a future classic.”

Replife is an artist like no other.

Based in Cleveland, he began riming at the age of 12 and enjoyed early success gaining national recognition both as a poet and rapper. However, in 2001 he decided to hang up his microphone believing that his days as a performance artist had passed him by and settled into another successful career as an award-winning journalist, columnist, editor and educator. Luckily in 2004 he was finally persuaded by the young producer aLIVE (of the Cleveland based Muamin Collective) to drop by the studio and pick up the mic again. This prolific collaboration helped to define a new Cleveland sound that fuses musical genres and yet manages to remain rooted to the essence of their home city – the realities of living in which have become the source of inspiration for Rep’s solo offering “The Unclosed Mind”

Much more than ‘just another hip hop album’, the Replife sound is often described as a fusion of hip hop, nu-jazz, future soul and broken beat – although even this description fails to capture the freshness and innovation behind the music and artist! And with this album Replife shows himself not only as a gifted rapper, poet, singer and writer, but as a master of ceremonies, pulling together talent from across the globe to complete one sonorous musical thought.

“The Unclosed Mind” is enriched and deepened by collaborations with a who’s who of talented contemporary musicians, producers, and vocalists. Dego of 4Hero fame and Bugz in the Attic’s Kaidi Tatham combine to produce the spaced-out J Dilla tribute “Spirit”, Mark de Clive-Lowe drops the heavyweight “Emerald City”, Atjazz produces the infectiously bouncy “Put It Down”, featuring rising Swedish vocalist Kissey Asplund, then there are the warm, intricate duets with vocalist Deborah Jordan (Silhouette Brown and Robert Mitchell’s Panacea), “Elevation” and “Pangea” to name but a few. It is these collaborations and more that make “The Unclosed Mind” appealing to more than just traditional rap music listeners – but to those who simply love good, soulful music. As Rep himself says “At a fundamental level, all of the producers contributing to the album are manipulating break beats, so the album is hip-hop based, but really this album isn’t about making good hip-hop. It’s about making good music.”

“The Unclosed Mind” is a journey through the thought-provoking, the abstract, the inspirational, the danceable, and the musical. With lyrics both challenging and inspiring Rep affirms his place as an original and unique emcee through the trials and tribulations of urban life and creates a musical soundscape that inevitably captures the ear and mind of the listener.

So let your mind too be unclosed.

In conjunction with this major exposure, the 13-track album will be available for download on his MySpace.com/PeterHadar site.

Hadar and his music are receiving impressive endorsements from major publications like URB Magazine, who aptly named him “the next, next Big thing in R&B”, when including him in their 2008 list of the Top 100 Artists. Major online mentions also include Billboard, VIBE, SOHH, About.com, SingersRoom and SoulTracks; amongst a host of others.

The album Well Dressed For The Art Show is an electronic upgrade to his critically acclaimed debut Memories Of The Heart. Hadar’s hearty, sultry vocals lace highly synthesized baselines, and speaks to a generation starving for something out of the box. Sidestepping traditional R&B formulas, the album unleashes a new generation of hypnotic energy; often deemed ‘Electronic R&B’. Even more recently featured on progressive imprints like okayplayer.com, and Vapors Magazine, this independent power-house is primed for the big leagues; an early review of the album in the June edition of YRB Magazine provides it’s first rave review.

Hadar who started his working career representing top fashion brands in and around NYC, got his break styling for other indie and signed artists. Since releasing “Memories…”, Hadar has been featured on stages with a myriad of top performers including Mos Def, Questlove, Taleb Kweli, Dwele, Musiq, Bilal, Q-tip, Estelle, Pete Rock, Raheem Devaugn, and Chrisette Michelle to name a few.

Peter Hadar will embark on his own 10-city tour starting Thursday June 5th in Philadelphia; with stops in LA, Detroit, Dallas, and NYC. His first single “Painted” is ripping thru underground and online radio stations, internationally. Intent on bringing his unique ‘Cool Weirdo’ style to the masses; this bonafied Hustler is well on his way.

Her diverse audio tour includes tracks from the infamous Detroit techno innovators Carl Craig and Plastikman, Germany’s funky minimal Bookashade, David Bowie’s German rendition of Heroes (Helden) & Ellen’s own track from her latest release Orchestra of Bubbles.

A hometown hero, Ellen Allien started the BPitch Control Party Series and founded the ubercool label BPitch Control Records. On her 2 hour-plus DVD, Ellen shows you her personal Other Side of the city she knows and loves.

With the Other Side, a new generation of immersive travel guide is upon us. Deaf Dumb & Blind Communications, a new progressive and multi-faceted entertainment company, teams up with internationally recognized travel guidebook and weekly magazine publisher Time Out to produce a series called The Other Side — an CD/DVD experience that submerses its listeners/viewers entirely below the city’s surface.

Each volume of The Other Side boasts two key elements: a mixed CD compiled by a native audio pioneer and a DVD guide that acts as a visual handbook for both the seasoned traveler and armchair adventurer alike. While some travel guides aim to be comprehensive, The Other Side isn’t concerned. It simply wants its user to enjoy and discover the very best and coolest in sight and sounds. It whispers in the user’s ear advice on where to go and what to see — and it does it with unprecedented style and flair.

That’s why Time Out is a perfect match for Deaf Dumb & Blind’s concept. According to Peter Fiennes, Editorial/Managing Director of Time Out Guides, “We’re extremely happy to be working with The Other Side and Deaf Dumb & Blind on this exciting new concept. We’ve always been keen to expand into music, CDs and travel on DVD, but The Other Side gives us the chance to do it all at the same time. The Other Side has lined up some great artists and we’re convinced this will be a very successful and ground-breaking project.”

Street Date ::: 4/17/07

Brooklyn-based CrystalTop Music reached out to its extended network and brought together eleven beautiful gems from eleven different artists for CrystalTop Music Presents. But drawing a line through the sounds collected under the banner of CrystalTop Music is an exercise that’s more likely to result in beautiful scribbles and loops than in a legible graph. “Diverse” barely begins to sketch the range. In fact, the common element shared by these artists may be the absence of a stylistic bag that can comfortably hold them; all the songs seem to reach for some sound that doesn’t fit into easy black and white categories.

This is partly an act of curation, so that Pyeng Threadgill’s soul-jazz take on Bill Withers and The Dang-it Bobbys’ country-rock joint, “Say Goodbye” talk to each other in ways they might not if you encountered them separately. But mostly it’s something that happens within the songs themselves. The heart of “Say Goodbye” is a soaring southern rock chorus worthy of The Allman Brothers, yet restless enough to wander off into Stevie Wonder-ish chord changes that speak of doo-wop. “Foreign Country” is the lyrical conceit of Christina Courtin’s sharp but melancholy love song — but also a subliminal self-description of grass a slightly different shade of blue, a moody ballad that finds its down-home abroad. Even the afrobeat of Martín Perna’s Ocote Soul Sounds has a Deep Purple heaviness, and elsewhere on this collection the spirits of Norah Jones, Pink Floyd, Carlos Santana and Radiohead are all channeled in unexpected ways.

Some of this is the natural eclecticism of well-crafted music, the ease with which serious players have always traded licks in spite of genre boundaries. But if phrases and ideas seem to jump more freely, over greater divides, on CTM Presents it’s because CrystalTop is not a studio-generated fiction but a clique of artists sharing six degrees of connection on stage and on record — in some cases the spokes on this wheel have known each other from school days, maybe even ran together as graffiti artists hitting up crystal-top buses. The music they make with each other reflects a generation who have come up with the self-segregated logic of rap and rock and ultimately rejected or outgrown it. It’s a new approach, but also a throwback in some ways to a certain moment of 70s utopianism, not because it’s self-consciously “retro,” but because it’s the sound of a generation of 70s harmony babies and 80s zebraheads coming of age with a boom. The result is a brand new bag.
The label on the side reads: Can’t we all just get it on?
– Edwin STATS Houghton February, 2007
