Miles Regis at Pounder-Kone Art Space

Miles Regis is a self-taught, experimental painter. Born in Trinidad, he has been greatly influenced by Caribbean artists such as Alexander King, LeRoy Clarke, Derek Walcott, Carlisle Harris, Boscoe & Geoffrey Holder and Michael and David Boothman. Regis’ paintings are distinctly Trinidadian in color and expression. He is particularly interested in experimenting with texture, and his multi-media works employ various types of paint, fabric, and found objects. Like a Caribbean backyard clothesline, the unframed paintings of Miles Regis hang freeform with everyday news. His works representing family, protection and daily life spill out on the canvas in graffitti-esque forms as if he only had a moment to scribble his thoughts before being run off by a conformist neighbor.

Regis’ work was recently showcased in CNN’s “African Voices” feature of actor Isaiah Washington, who collects Regis’ paintings; Other collectors of Miles Regis’ work include Ron Perlman and Nicolette Sheridan.
